Angèle : the latest addition to tiktok.

Its steady rise in popularity has pushed TikTok to become one of the most thought platforms for young teens and curious adults alike. So it was to be expected that people of influence and importance, from presidents to actors, will see this application as an opportunity to reach a younger audience. As such, lately, we can observe that more and more artists are giving the app a chance such as Billie Eilish and Jojo Siwa. This phenomenon, however, doesn’t limit itself to English artists only. In fact, into the french singer Louane’s addition, TikTok now has recently welcomed the Belgium singer Angèle, with the username  angele_vl, to its ranks.

The famous international singer has first joined tik to today the 29th of January with a cover of Alicia Key fallin’, with her playing the piano and guitar in duo format. This is not surprising considering her affiliation to English music and her recent collaboration with dua lipa on fever.

Even though the 25 years old singer joke about not understanding the app and claiming that it made her feel old, as seen in her bio,  she has, as of now, released five videos today ranging from jokes about her beloved dog to music-related videos.

Louane: The French singer is now on TikTok.

From Arnold Schwarzenegger to Billie Eilish, a lot of international celebrities have thought out TikTok as a way to connect with their young fans or just to have some fun and enjoy the musical app. Some celebrities are very easily found, with clear user names and top-notch editing teams. But some, are more down to earth, sometimes hidden in plain sight between the millions of users but as active as any. One such person would be the internationally famous French singer and actress Louane, known under the username @watchoutforthetornado.

She first posted a video on the 19th of December 2020, in which she sings a cover of the song “Stuck with you” by Ariana Grande in duets format, leaving room for other people to interact with her.

she then continued to post a multitude of other videos related to various topics such as other covers of songs belonging to French and English singers such as Pomme, and Justin Beiber without forgetting the fun challenges with her loved ones.

All these videos had one thing in common and that is a large number of comments mentioning the singer’s identity and pointing out “that she looks a lot like Louane”. The loss of some people did add a bit of ironic humor to the mix but the French artist finally cleared out the mild confusion by stating in her latest and first video of the year, that she is, indeed Louane, through a song in true TikTok fashion.

The 24 yeas old French singer is a great addition to the platform and seems to be enjoying her time on TikTok as much as her fans welcome her presence there.

Dua Lipa and Angèle: the collab we didn’t know we needed.

The Belgium singer Angèle and the British singer Dua lipa shocked the world on the 6 of November by releasing the single “Fever”. The song released on dua lipa’s album, along with its music video,  certainly turned out to be one of the most interesting singles of 2020.

For one, the duality between Angèle’s soft melodious voice and Dua Lipa’s deep timber made for a beautiful contrast. Each of them bought out the telling characteristics of the other and made for a very well textured sound.

The mix between french and English also added to the songs’ charm. It was very interesting to see Angèle and dua lipa sing in languages other than the one we are used to hearing from them. It added another layer of novelty to this collaboration.

Finally, the music video was a refreshing derivation from the extravagant and complex music videos fans are used to seeing on screen. The casual and intimate atmosphere found in the singers’ supposed night stroll in London touches on people’s daily lives. It feels human in its imperfections as well as in the conversations and night sounds let in to make it feel genuine.  It doesn’t paint the artists as two international stars but as two friends just having some fun. With the pandemic around, people miss this kind of casual fun they used to take for granted.

All of these characteristics made “fever” a great addition to pop music.

“Portrait of a lady on fire”: to watch or not to watch?

This post is spoiler free

So, after months of stalling, I finally decided to tackle the period drama “portrait of a lady on fire”.It depicts the story between a French aristocrat(Héloïse) and a female painter(Marianne) paid to make her wedding portrait in secret while posing as Héloïse walking companion. As such, the Cannes award for best screenplay winner came with a lot of promises, especially knowing that Director Céline Sciamma isn’t exactly a Cannes first-timer. But now, past projects aside, is “portrait of a lady on fire”, as a stand-alone film, really worth watching? It wouldn’t be the first time that an award-winning movie left the viewer with nothing but disappointment. Well, dear readers, fear not for I went ahead and watched it for you all! And here’s why I think you should jump that leap of faith too and invest some of your time and emotions in that movie.

The first thing that made this viewing experience interesting was the approach Sciamma took on love. Here it’s a fleeting moment, a memory in the making, and that was made clear since the first scene of the movie. Furthermore, what makes these feelings stand out, even more, is the relationship between the characters themselves. Indeed, there could have been a lot of factors influencing their relationships dynamic like their social status, their sexuality, the knowledge that what is happening between them isn’t going to last. But Instead, there was no internal conflict coming in the way like it’s usually portrayed in queer movies. On the contrary, you could say that the fact that these feelings were exchanged between two women gave the relationship a certain immunity to the demands and expectations of society .Héloïse and Marianne took it as it is. Nothing but raw feelings and passion. It did feel like they “invented something new”.It gave this story a certain level of intimacy and companionship.

Talking about intimacy, another thing that I really appreciated in this movie is the way it portrayed the sexual aspect and desires of the two main characters. The concept of consent is clearly present between the two ladies and the sexual tension isn’t obnoxiously thrown in with a ten-minute sex scene. In fact, it was always here. From the first interaction between Héloïse and Marianne, we could see the tension flowing in the air. From the “stolen” glances to the tones of their voices, their passion can clearly be seen. Moreover, anytime there’s a mention of sex or nudity, we can see that both of the leading women are open with there desires, it feels so natural and intimate. Not like it’s some “scandalous lesbian sex scene”.

Another thing worth watching the movie for is the way it’s laced with cultural and literary references. The glimpse of art history and the very fitting use of the myth of Orpheus give this movie a whole different layer of depth. Without forgetting how Sciamma is able to tackle modern themes through characters like  Marianne, Sophi(the maid of the household), and HĂ©loĂŻse all while staying historically accurate. I would even say that the historical accuracy played to her advantage.

But most of all, what really made all of these aspects of the movie stand out, for me, was the incredible acting. Adèle Haenel and Noémie Merlant honestly made the characters look real, they gave the story a vassal. You can see the feelings though their eyes, in their smiles and movement, in the tones of their voices. Besides, with the minimalistic style of Sciamma, the acting really stood out.

With it’s incredible acting and storytelling, this movie took me on a beautiful journey of love in coastal France of the 18th century.Between paintings, music and card games, this movie left me crying and reflecting on a lot of interesting ideas it sparked in me,so yes,it is worth watching. Will it have this same effect on you? There’s only one way to find out.
