I’m gonna admit, when I first heard that Billie Eilish is making the next bond theme with the help of her brother Finneas, I was a bit skeptical. After all, her style of music didn’t exactly fit with those of the previous singers of the franchise. After hearing it though, I was pleasantly surprised to find that Eilish’s song has everything of a James bond theme and much more. In fact, that special brand of music the singer is so known for might have some additions for the long-standing tradition of the bond theme.
Indeed, with Billie Eilish known for her dark style, it’s no wonder it added another interesting layer to the bond song. Her voiced laced with quite a danger is a refreshing contrast with the majestically orchestrated music. The artist was able to give us a song infused with the James bond ambiance of danger and suspense without leaving her own style behind. we ended up with smooth music full of dark undertones, similar to the calm before a storm. Furthermore, the Grammy winner also gave this new theme song a bit of the angst she is known for. Bond is shown as a man hurt, betrayed, which is very in tune with what we know of the movie through the trailer. We are confronted with a person in pain but that cannot morn his loss. It shows us a different side of James bond. That character who’s always shown as a player, who’s always shown as cool and in control, is here in a different light. In Billie’s version,he’s someone broody, misunderstood and in a lot of pain, who even second guess himself. (“Was I stupid to love you? Was I reckless to help? Was it obvious to everybody else?”) Yet, even though he is going through all of that, he still picks himself up and fight .“now you’ll never see me cry there’s just no time to die.”
we could say that billie’s musical interpretation of Bond really adds a lot to the franchise. The vulnerability portrayed makes the character quite endearing, relatable and somewhat more human. All of that wrapped in tension-filled music gave us a song igniting a lot of promises and expectations for the upcoming James Bond movie. Will it be able to satisfie what the song sparked? Only time will tell.
